How to get your team onboard with company values

Values may be unclear or members of your team might not agree with all of them. As the manager, your responsibility is to make sure the values are understood and translated into the day to day work.

Show how values contribute to success

Deloitte found that 70% of the employees who agreed that their companies had performed well financially also said their executive management team speaks to them often about the core aspects of the company’s culture. Connecting successes to values is an easy way to create positivity around them while showcasing how they directly impact success. The next time your team delivers a project successfully, take a few minutes to connect it back to the company values.

Acknowledge values in action

Is someone really living up to company values? Acknowledge them. Say that you appreciate them taking the values onboard and make sure to show appreciation publicly as well – especially in front of team members. This will motivate employees, giving them further incentives to consider values when making important decisions.

Make values part of employee development

During performance reviews, managers often suggest certain activities or new tactics to support employees to improve their performance. Why not coach employees on how to better embody your core values as well? Be open with those who are not acting in accordance with values and offer suggestions for improvement.

Hire the right people

Last but not least, company values should ideally be part of the recruitment process. When interviewing people, ask them how they work to evaluate alignment with values. Once somebody is hired, make sure they are properly onboarded on company values and understand their importance.
