When we receive recognition and feel appreciated, it strengthens the bonds in our team as well as our sense of belonging. Like in any good relationship, we want to feel irreplaceable. We might just be a cog in the big machinery, but at least a crucial one!

Recognition can come in all forms and sizes. There's no need to make it complicated. If you feel uninspired, check out our list of ideas on how to say: “You’re awesome, and I see you!”

Ask for advice

Nothing strengthens self-esteem as getting asked for advice. “You did such a great job with that thing, what’s your opinion on this? / what would you do if you were in my shoes?” Why don't you try to involve your colleagues more in what you're working on?

Say thanks in public

If you have an especially helpful colleague, make sure to let other people know in the next meeting. Speak up and say “thanks” for that time you got help managing a challenging customer, solving a tricky problem, or just getting the computer up and running. Open gratefulness can be a real boost for collaboration.

Leave a handwritten note

In the digital age, an actual written note stands out. No need to overcomplicate things and get poetic, a post-it is just fine, even if it's just a smiley with a short positive message.

Offer to help

Another way to show appreciation is to offer your help when a colleague is in need. If you don’t know how to directly support them to solve the problem at hand, offer to help with something else to give them more time; buy lunch, get coffee, or empty the dish washer if it’s their turn.

Put them in the spotlight

Stressed managers tend to miss out on heroic actions. Do you have a colleague who has accomplished something worthy of attention? Make sure to put them in the spotlight and honour their work when you get the opportunity! We’re raised not to brag, so you should encourage your colleague to show off. “Can’t you share the story from when you…” can be a god start of the conversation.

Tell them they’re awesome

The oldest trick in the book. Just say: “Great job” after a meeting, a presentation or any job well done. “You’re awesome” and “I’m happy to be working with you” are variations of this positive, encouraging theme.

Mention them on social media

Share an update on LinkedIn or Facebook telling your friends how awesome your colleagues are. Aside from making them feel special, you’ll allow people outside of your workplace to learn more about your projects, which is not just great for employer branding, but also encourages gratitude in your social circle.
